Paint monasteries from Bucovina - 3 days - 250 € - 3 days and 2 nights - Guide ENGL

| Day 1: Sinaia – Vatra Dornei – Moldovita – Sucevita – Putna - Radauti

Moldovita monastery located in the village of Vatra Moldovitei, was built by Petru Rares in 1532. The Siege of Constantinople frescoes were inspired by a poem dedicated to the Virgin Mary in thanksgiving for her intervention in saving the city of Constantinople from a Persian attack in A.D. 626. In a wonderful political spin, considering the Ottoman threat to Moldavia in the 1500s, the Siege on the walls of Moldovita Church depicts the enemy as turbaned Turks rather than Persians. Another stunning representation depicts the Tree of Jesse, representing Christ’s genealogy, a wide-spread iconographical theme in Europe during the Middle Ages.

Sucevita monastery – build between 1582-1584 at Gheorghe Movila’s, Bishop of Radauti, initiative. Sucevita boasts a magnificent depiction of the Ladder to Paradise. Red-winged angels in orderly rows attend the righteous on a slanting ladder to the heavens, each rung inscribed with one of the monastic virtues. Sinners fall through the rungs and are driven by grinning devils to the chaos of hell. On the south side, foliage entwines the rows of figures in the Tree of Jesse. Following it is the Hymn to the Virgin

Putna monastery – founded by Prince Stephen the Great in 1469 and was designed to be the necropolis of the ruler's family and his descendents, including Petru Rares. The story goes that it was built in a general area picked out by Stephen's advisor, Daniel the Hermit. The exact position of the church was left up to God when Stephen went to the top of a hill and fired an arrow— wherever it fell the church would be built.

| Day 2 - Radauti – Dragomirna – Humor - Voronet – Tg Neamt

Dragomirna monastery - is in a beautiful area, close to the forest, next to a lake, beyond the village Mitocul Dragomirnei. It was founded in 1609 by the scholar, artist and Bishop Anastasie Crimca. Another little church had been built in 1602, previous to the building of the great monastery. This little church can be seen today in the graveyard of the Dragomirna monastery.

Humor monastery - as built in 1530 by High Chancellor Teodor Bubuiog at the behest of Voivode Petru Rares, on the site of a previous monastery built before 1415. Humor was one of the first of Bucovina's painted monasteries to be frescoed and, along with Voronet is probably the best preserved. Humor is mainly painted in reddish brown (from oriental madder pigment), completed nevertheless by rich blues and greens. The Last Judgment, placed on the wall beneath the unusual open porch, is similar to the Voronet one, but, unfortunately, the Tree of Jesse has been effaced by erosion.

Voronet monastery – UNESCO - Stephen the Great founded Voronet Monastery in 1488 to fulfill a pledge to the hermit Daniil, who had encouraged the ruling prince of Moldavia to chase the Turks from Wallachia.  is considered by many to be the "Sixtine Chapel of the East", due to its magnificent frescoes placed on the West wall. These feature an intense shade of blue known in Romania as , "Voronet Blue", a colors obtained from lapis lazuli, which has been added to the lexicon of art alongside colors such as the "Titian Red" and "Veronese Green", being unique. The "Last Judgment" painted on the western wall of the church is probably the finest composition among the paintings of the monasteries in Moldavia.

| Day 3 – Tg Neamt- Bicaz gorges – Rosu Lake – Tusnad - Sf Ana Lake – Sinaia

Neamt monastery - It was built in 14th (1497) century, and it is an example of medieval Moldavian architecture. Sumptuous, with delicate colour effects, the monastery shows the maturity of the Moldavian architectonic style, which matured during Steven the Great’s period. The façade of the church is covered with the decoration characteristic of Steven the Great’s time: Gothic windows and friezes with enameled disks, coloured in green, yellow and brown.

Bicaz Gorges - is one of the most spectacular places in Romania, located in the north-east part of the country.  The canyon was dug by the waters of Bicaz River and it serves as a passageway between the Romanian provinces of Moldova and Transylvania. It is a noted location to see the wall creeper, an uncommon cliff-dwelling bird. The road along the 8 kilometers of ravines, often in serpentines with rock on one side and a sheer drop on the other is one of the most spectacular drives in the country.

Rosu Lake - the Red Lake In the summer of 1837, after some abundant rains, a great quantity of rocks and debris slid from the Northern side of the mountain blocking the Bicajel River. The water has accumulated and formed a natural storage lake. The magic of the lake is amplified by the dead trunks of the old fir trees which used to grow there before, which now pierce out from the water. The name Lacu Rosu - Red Lake comes from the reddish alluvia deposited in the lake by its main tributary. The legend says that beautiful Esther was attacked by a bandit and she prayed the mountain to help her, so the mountain moved and killed the attacker but unfortunately also the girl. The lake’s reddish colour and its name are to remind that day’s sacrifice.

Sf Ana Lake - Saint Ann Lake is situated near Tusnad resort at an altitude of 950 m. It is the only lake in Central Europe formed in a volcano crater (called Puciosul). The area surrounding the lake forms a complex geological and flora Natural Reserve named Mohos.
